Best Pizza – Col ‘Cacchio! Ti amo!

FIFA, football and vuvudecibels are all very well – until your favourite team loses. That’s when you’ll probably want a little comfort morsel or two to take your mind off your misery. Alternatively, your team might have won and there will be the need to celebrate with good friends, superlative food and the friendliest service in Johannesburg.

Col 'Cacchio Fairlands

…And doesn’t Col ‘Cacchio just deliver in spades!!! Now I’m sure all Col ‘Cacchio branches in the franchise are great restaurants – but the outlet at World Wear in Fairlands Johannesburg, in my opinion, is several lengths ahead of any other pizzeria this side of The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe.

I’ve eaten there no less than 30 times and I’m STILL waiting to catch them on an ‘off’ day. Your experience starts as you approach the restaurant. Seductive aromas lure you towards the front door, where a 10Megawatt smile and a welcome radiates from any staff member who happens to be nearest.

Waiters are friendly, yet discreet – personable, without being those nauseating bouncy individuals that you’d like to shoot with either a tranquilizing dart or a 12 bore. Every waiter I’ve spoken to knows the menu well and is empowered to make most menu variations a reality for you. Passion bubbles out of everyone at this particular outlet; not only a passion for Italian food, but South African hospitality and friendliness.

As you will see in future eating-out critiques, I will attempt to retain a sort of scoring consistency by initially defining my perception of the target market, thereby comparing apples with apples, so to speak.

General comments:

  • Pizzas: Paper thin, crispy, flavourful crusts.
  • Tomato base – unsurpassed.
  • Ingredients – only the best. It is what I would serve my dearest friends at home.
  • Salads – fresh, crisp ingredients without being water-logged. Addicted to your Scampi Salad.
  • Desserts – Si si!! Molto Delizioso!!

Col ‘Cacchio Fairlands – Your passion is contagious and I now have it in the chronic form. You are the yardstick against which all other pizzerias will be measured.

Category # out of 10 Notable Points

Welcome/greeting 10 Greeting is always there. They always appear genuinely happy you came.

Quality of staff 10 Never had a bad experience
Ambiance 10 Convivial, happy, vibrant. A great place to take friends
Table appearance 10 Well set out. Clean. Love the salt n’ pepper dispensers. The brown paper table covers invite you to have a good time.
Menu variety & flexibility 10 The menu variety is enormous! I’ve had guests ask for some complex variations – never been let down.
Cleanliness 10 Simply put, the place is spotless. Food prep areas visible to the public are regularly cleared down. Even when kids have been at tables, the mess is discreetly but efficiently taken care of.
Service 10 Can’t fault it. Our orders were taken and delivered faultlessly. They’re great sales people too – with helpful suggestions. Without the hard-sell unpleasantness.
Promptness 10 Never had to wait more than 20 minutes – and that was when the place was heaving!
Food – presentation 10 Always outstanding – whether a pizza, a salad or dessert.
Ingredient quality 10 You simply DON’T see bruised avos, droopy lettuce or second rate meat.
Taste 10 An eruption of flavour. If it was any better – it would be illegal.
Delivered as advertised 10 Oh yes! And more.
Worth the spend 10 Definitely. While this is not a budget eatery – it is far from pricey. And I reckon it’s worth every cent.
Worth going again 10 Count on it!!!
Total Score 149.8 Out of 150

I think we have our World Cup winners right here.

About Freud Fission Chips

Despite the banality of the name, FFC has led an intensely varied life. Grateful for surviving almost three years as a 'troepie' (soldier for non-South African Readers) in the Angolan war, he determined to wring as much out of life as possible. Currently providing Business Analysis services, trading on the stock market and developing web pages to pay the bills, FFC also dabbles in wildlife, landscape and people photography, writing, and far too many interests for his own good. He has also travelled extensively in southern Africa (working on the sound theory that a moving target is more dificult to hit). These peregrinations also include over 1500kms on foot through some of the worlds most spectacular scenery. It hasn't all been plain sailing, beer and skittles, and endless beds of roses... Chief amongst the prerequisites for surviving Africa, with its mind-bending characteristics, is an appropriate sense of humour.... So, for now, he will be recounting the amusing among the annoying, the frustrating wrapped in the funny and extracting the mirth from the melancholy... Oh yes, there might be some alliteration too.
